The sensor was my suspicion. Were your symptoms exactly the same? Did replacing the exhaust back pressure sensor fix it?

My symptoms were pretty much the same. I'd bet it's the pressure sensor. Take it to a workshop to check; it'll save you a headache.

Sounds like what happened with my V90, though I didn't notice the smell so much. Low DPF exhaust pressure is common. Have you checked the exhaust back pressure sensor?
