V90 Undervoltage Error

I'm experiencing an 'undervoltage detected' error with my 2023 Volvo V90 hybrid. It has 139421 km. The vehicle starts poorly and various systems fail intermittently. I've observed weak or flickering lights, and the battery feels weak when starting. I suspect a bad cell or charging system issue.

Summary of the thread

A 2023 Volvo V90 hybrid was experiencing an 'undervoltage detected' error, leading to poor starts and intermittent system failures. The symptoms suggested a weak battery or charging system issue. It was advised to avoid DIY diagnostics due to the complexity of hybrid systems and instead consult a qualified workshop. The workshop confirmed a heavily discharged and defective battery, which was replaced, resolving the issue.

Undervoltage errors in modern Volvos, especially hybrids, can be tricky. You've correctly identified potential causes like battery health and charging system issues. Given the symptoms – poor starts, system failures, and weak lights – a heavily discharged or defective battery is certainly plausible. However, other factors could contribute, such as an alternator issue leading to insufficient charging, or a parasitic drain causing excessive voltage drop when the car is off. Have you tested the battery's resting voltage and its voltage while the engine is running? What does checking the battery health yield?

Thanks for the quick response! I haven't performed any voltage tests myself, nor have I checked the battery's health directly. Honestly, I am not really experienced with these things. Can you please provide me with more details on how I can do these tests?

Given your lack of experience with voltage testing, and considering the potential complexity of a hybrid system, I would strongly advise against attempting DIY diagnostics. Modern Volvos have intricate electronics. Incorrectly probing around can cause further damage, potentially voiding warranties or creating safety hazards. While I understand the desire to troubleshoot, it's best to take your V90 to a qualified workshop. Explain the undervoltage error, the symptoms you've observed, and your suspicion of a battery or charging system problem. They have the necessary equipment and expertise to accurately diagnose the root cause.

Just wanted to let you know I took the V90 to a trusted workshop, and they confirmed that it was indeed a heavily discharged and defective battery, as initially suspected. After replacing the old unit, the error message is gone. The final bill came to 290€, which I think is reasonable. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
