V90 VANOS Issue

I have a 2018 Volvo V90 diesel with 125342 km. The check engine light is on sometimes, and fuel consumption is up. Diagnostics suggest a possible problem with the inlet VANOS. Could a bad camshaft solenoid valve or low power be the cause? Any ideas?

VANOS failure on these can be a pain. I had similar symptoms on my older V70. Check the oil for sludge. Sludge can really mess with the VANOS system. Also, when was the timing chain last checked? If it's stretched, that can throw off the timing and trigger the VANOS issues.

Thanks. I changed the oil about 5000 km ago, and it looked clean, no sludge. The timing chain hasn't been checked while I've owned the car. Could a stretched timing chain cause VANOS symptoms without engine misfires?

Yes, a slightly stretched chain can definitely cause VANOS issues before you get misfires. It's enough to throw off the camshaft timing. If the light's on and fuel consumption is up, plus you suspect the VANOS, it really needs looking at. I’d get it to a workshop to rule out damaged VANOS components.

Thanks for the advice. I'll book a workshop appointment to check the timing chain and VANOS. Your help was really useful. It was a camshaft solenoid valve and the repair cost about 250€.
