V90 Weak Battery
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Volvo V90 diesel is experiencing weak battery performance, particularly during cold starts, and flickering interior lights, suggesting a potential voltage issue. The initial suspicion is a faulty battery sensor, but it is advised to also consider the voltage regulator and alternator output as possible causes. A similar case was resolved by replacing a defective battery sensor, which was identified quickly by a professional workshop, highlighting the benefit of professional diagnostics over self-testing.

Thanks, good point about the messenger. I haven't checked the voltage regulator or alternator as closely as the battery sensor. How did you check those? Any specific voltage ranges or codes I should look for?

Honestly, I just took it to a good shop after checking for loose connections. They hooked it up to their stuff and found a bad battery sensor in like, 10 minutes. Cost me about 315€ to replace. Saved me a ton of time with a multimeter. Plus, they guaranteed the work.

Thanks. Based on what you said, I'll get it checked by a workshop. That repair cost gives me a good idea what to expect. It was a defective battery sensor, repair cost 315€.

My Volvo V90 D4 car starts the engine well and has no signs of faults on the dashboard. I think it still has the original battery, 7 years old. The problem is that it stopped opening and closing doors with the remote or the door touch. The mechanic, using a scanner, says that the battery needs to be changed. Has anyone experienced this? He cleared the errors, and the next day it didn't work again. Should I really change the battery?

Yes, it's likely time to replace the battery. A 7-year-old battery is quite old, and even if the engine starts well, it might not hold enough charge for other electronic functions like the remote locking system. Replacing the battery should resolve these issues. After replacing it, monitor if the problem persists and let us know if you have further questions.

I had something similar on my V90. Weak starts, lights acting funky – sounds like a battery issue for sure. Did you check the voltage regulator or alternator output? Sometimes those can cause the sensor to throw false positives. It's like blaming the messenger for a bad message!
