Vanette MAF sensor symptoms
Summary of the thread
The 2009 Nissan Vanette is experiencing higher fuel consumption, frequent engine stalls at idle, a check engine light, and smoke from the exhaust, which are indicative of a potential mass air flow (MAF) sensor issue. These symptoms suggest the MAF sensor might be sending incorrect data to the engine's computer, affecting the air-fuel ratio. Cleaning the MAF sensor with a specific cleaner might help, but given the symptoms and vehicle mileage, replacement is recommended. Visiting a mechanic for a thorough check and possible replacement is advised.

Thanks. I haven't tried cleaning the MAF sensor yet. Can you tell me how to do it? What cleaner should I use, and what precautions should I take? Also, can a bad MAF sensor cause a noticeable performance drop, especially at higher speeds?

Cleaning the MAF sensor can sometimes help, but with those symptoms and the mileage, replacing it might be better. Use a MAF sensor cleaner; other cleaners can damage it. Disconnect the battery, carefully remove the sensor, spray it per the cleaner's instructions, let it dry, and reinstall. Yes, a bad MAF sensor can absolutely cause performance loss, especially at higher speeds, because the engine isn't getting the right air-fuel mixture. Given everything, it's best to go to a local workshop.

Thanks for the explanation and advice. I'll go to a mechanic to check the MAF sensor and talk about replacing it. It cost 365€ to fix.

Those symptoms definitely point to a MAF sensor issue. Higher fuel consumption, stalling, and the check engine light are classic signs. The smoke could be from an improper air-fuel ratio because of the faulty sensor sending bad data to the engine's computer. Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor? Sometimes it's just dirt or oil. But with that mileage, it might be time to replace it.
