Vanette VANOS Solenoid Fault
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Nissan Vanette is experiencing a check engine light and poor fuel consumption, with a diagnostic pointing to a VANOS inlet camshaft fault. The issue may stem from a faulty camshaft solenoid valve or a power supply problem. A similar case suggested that oil sludge could clog the VANOS solenoid, leading to these symptoms. The recommended solution is to have the solenoid checked and possibly replaced by a professional mechanic.

Yeah, definitely feels a bit sluggish at low speeds. Oil sludge... that's interesting. Did cleaning the solenoid help, or did you end up replacing it?

Honestly, I tried cleaning it myself but didn't have much luck. Bit beyond my capabilities I think. In the end, I just took it to my local garage. They confirmed it was the VANOS solenoid and swapped it out. Not cheap, but fixed the problem immediately. I'd advise you to go to the workshop.

Appreciate the info! Sounds like I'm headed to the shop then. They quoted me around 250€ for the repair, so I'm hoping that sorts it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms in my Vanette a while back - check engine light and all. It was a pain. Have you noticed any loss of power, especially at lower RPMs? When I had this issue, my mechanic mentioned something about oil sludge potentially clogging things up around the VANOS solenoid.
