Vauxhall Vectra Camshaft Sensor Issue

I'm having some issues with my 2001 Vauxhall Vectra diesel. It's got about 91,000 km on the clock. Lately, it's been difficult to start, and the engine feels like it's lost some power. The check engine light is on, and the error memory shows something about the camshaft sensor. I checked the sensor itself, and it seems fine, but I suspect the cable or plug might be dodgy. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2001 Vauxhall Vectra diesel with 91,000 km was experiencing starting difficulties, power loss, and a check engine light indicating a camshaft sensor issue. The initial suspicion was a faulty sensor or problematic wiring. It was suggested to also check the crankshaft sensor, as its malfunction could cause similar symptoms. Ultimately, the problem was traced to the camshaft sensor wiring, which was repaired, resolving the issue.

Sounds like a camshaft sensor issue alright. Could be a faulty sensor, or as you suspect, a wiring problem. Have you checked the crankshaft sensor as well? Sometimes a faulty crankshaft sensor can cause similar symptoms and trigger errors related to the camshaft. It's like when your brain misinterprets signals if you have a bad headache.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the crankshaft sensor yet. Where exactly is it located, and is it difficult to get to? Also, would a bad crankshaft sensor really cause the camshaft sensor to throw an error?

The crankshaft sensor is usually near the crankshaft pulley, often behind the engine. Access can be a pain, depending on your setup. And yeah, a faulty crankshaft sensor can mess with the timing signals, causing the camshaft sensor to report errors. It's like a domino effect. Best get it to a workshop and have the timing checked.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were right – it was the camshaft sensor wiring. They fixed the connection and cleared the error codes. Cost me 95€. Runs like a charm now!
