Vectra Coolant Loss

My 2000 Vauxhall Vectra, diesel engine, with 241573 km is showing a persistent coolant level issue. The check engine light illuminates intermittently, and diagnostic scans reveal a 'coolant level too low' error. I've checked for obvious leaks around the radiator hoses and radiator cap, but found nothing. Could this be a head gasket issue, or perhaps just air pockets forming?

I had a similar issue with my Vectra, though I can't remember the exact year. Is it losing a lot of coolant, or just a bit over time? Have you checked around the water pump area for any signs of dried coolant? That's where mine was leaking last year.

It's losing a noticeable amount, requiring top-ups every couple of weeks. I'll check around the water pump area as you suggested. Was your check engine light also coming on, and did you get the same error code?

Yep, exact same symptoms. Check engine light and the same error code. It turned out to be a very slow leak from the water pump seal. Small enough that it was hard to spot, but enough to trigger the low coolant warning. I would recommend taking it to a workshop.

Thanks for the insight! I checked the water pump area as you suggested, and you were spot on. Took it to the workshop and they found a small leak at the water pump seal. Repair cost 52€. Problem solved!
