Vectra high fuel consumption and stalling

My 2008 Vauxhall Vectra with a gasoline engine is giving me trouble. It's got about 92000 km on the clock. I've noticed higher fuel consumption, the engine occasionally stalls at idle, and the check engine light is always on. Plus, there's some smoke when I accelerate. I suspect it might be the mass air flow meter (LMM), but I'd like a second opinion before replacing parts. Any ideas?

I had similar issues with my Vectra. That sounds a lot like a MAF sensor failure. Did you check the air filter? A dirty air filter can sometimes cause problems with the MAF sensor, like clogging it up. It's like trying to breathe through a thick blanket – the sensor gets confused by the lack of airflow.

That's a good point about the air filter. I'll check it out. But if it's not that, is it definitely the MAF sensor? How did you diagnose yours? I'm trying to avoid just throwing parts at the problem.

Well, after checking the air filter and confirming it was clean, the symptoms persisted. I took it to a workshop, they confirmed it with a diagnostic tool. The mechanic said it was like the sensor was sending the wrong signals to the engine, so it was getting the air-fuel mixture all wrong. Best go to a workshop, they can check the fault codes. It cost me around 365€.

Thanks a bunch for the insights! I'll get the air filter checked and then take it to my local workshop for a diagnostic check. You were spot on. The diagnostics confirmed it was indeed the MAF sensor that had gone kaput. Replaced it, and now she's running smooth as butter. Fuel consumption is back to normal, no more stalling, and the check engine light is finally off! Cost me 365€, everything included.
