Vectra power steering fault

My 2000 Vauxhall Vectra diesel has a vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, and an error code. It's hard to steer, like the power steering is failing. I've checked the cable and plug, suspecting a defect. Any ideas?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my Vectra. The vibrating steering wheel and spongy handling are classic signs. Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level? A low fluid level can definitely cause those symptoms. Also, inspect the steering rack for any obvious leaks or damage. It might be worth getting the wheel alignment checked too, just to rule it out.

Thanks, I appreciate the suggestions. The hydraulic fluid level is fine, and I didn't see any leaks on the steering rack. I'll get the wheel alignment checked. Did you resolve the issue on your Vectra? What was the cause?

Yeah, on my Vectra it turned out to be a faulty connection to the electric steering system. I messed around with it myself for a bit, but honestly, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose the electrical connections and save you a lot of hassle. They will probably read out the error memory and have a look at the cable or plug connection like you suggested.

Thanks for confirming you experienced a similar issue. I took the Vectra to a workshop based on your recommendation. It was a defective cable connection, like I suspected. Repair costs were 95€. Your advice was most helpful.
