Vectra Radiator Fan Failure

My 2005 Vauxhall Vectra diesel is giving me headaches. 223199 km on the clock. The radiator fan seems defective – engine's overheating, and the check engine light's on. I've checked the coolant level, which is fine. Fuses all seem OK, and there's no obvious blockage in the radiator. Suspecting a faulty speed sensor. Anyone else had similar gremlins?

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms on my Vectra. Is the fan running constantly at high speed, or not at all? Worth checking the fan motor relay too, before you start chasing sensors. Could also be a dodgy thermostat preventing proper coolant circulation. Like a blocked artery in your cooling system.

Thanks for the reply. The fan isn't running at all, as far as I can tell. Whereabouts is the fan motor relay located? And would a faulty thermostat necessarily trigger the check engine light?

Relay location varies depending on spec, check your manual, should be in the engine bay fuse box. Regarding the light, thermostat issues can cause the engine to run hotter than normal, which will trigger the light. Given the fan isn't running, I'd put my money on the fan motor itself or the relay, though a workshop check is probably a good idea at this point.

Appreciate the advice. Took it to the workshop, and as you suspected, the speed sensor was defective, stopping the fan to start. Cost me 250€ all in. Running like a champ again.
