Vel Satis Oil Temperature Warning

My 2006 Renault Vel Satis diesel is throwing errors. The oil temperature warning light is on, and the oil pressure lamp is lighting up. There's an error stored related to the oil temperature sensor. I've checked the basics, like oil level, but any ideas where to look next? I am thinking it might be a faulty temperature sensor cable or plug connection.

Summary of the thread

A 2006 Renault Vel Satis diesel is experiencing oil temperature and pressure warning lights, with an error related to the oil temperature sensor. The initial checks, such as oil level, were done, leading to suspicion of a faulty temperature sensor cable or plug connection. Suggestions included inspecting the wiring harness for corrosion or damage, as a bad connection can mimic a faulty sensor. Ultimately, the issue was resolved by addressing the cable and plug connection at a workshop.

Whoa, sounds familiar! I had almost the EXACT same thing happen in my old Saab 9-3, although it was a petrol engine. The oil temperature sensor was giving me grief, triggering all sorts of alarms. Did the same, checked the oil levels, even replaced the oil filter just in case! Before diving into replacing the sensor, which can be a pain, have you checked the wiring harness and connector for corrosion or damage? A bad connection can mimic a faulty sensor. What mileage are you at?

Appreciate the tip about the wiring. I'm at 185717 km. Where exactly should I be looking for this wiring harness? Is it easy to spot, or is it buried deep within the engine bay?

Okay, that mileage could be a factor. On my Saab, the harness was routed near the exhaust manifold, so heat damage was a likely culprit. Tracing the wire from the sensor itself is usually the easiest way to find it. Honestly, though, with those symptoms and the stored error code, it really points to a sensor or wiring issue. If you're not super confident poking around the electrics, and don't have a multimeter, I'd seriously consider getting it checked by a workshop. I ended up doing the same, cost me 95€ to sort out.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I think you're right; I'm going to bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. I'd rather not risk messing something up even worse. They said it was the cable and the plug connection. Now the Vel Satis is running fine.
