VelSatis ABS Fault

My 2009 Renault VelSatis with a diesel engine is acting up. The ABS light is always on, and the whole system seems dead. Error memory points to a lateral acceleration sensor fault. Mileage is 76910 km. Has anyone dealt with this before? I suspect a faulty control unit, but I'm open to ideas before I start taking things apart or going to a mechanic.

Lateral acceleration sensor faults can be tricky. Before assuming it's the control unit, have you checked the sensor and its wiring? A loose connection or damaged wire could look like a sensor failure. Also, is the fault intermittent or constant? Intermittent suggests wiring, constant suggests sensor failure.

Good point about the wiring! I hadn't thought about an intermittent fault. I'll check the connections, but where's the sensor located? Is it easy to get to, or will it be difficult? Also, can I test the sensor with a multimeter to rule it out before I start thinking about the control unit?

Unfortunately, I don't have the specific location for your vehicle. You can check the sensor with a multimeter, but you'll need the correct specifications to avoid damage. Given the complexity of ABS/ESP systems and the diagnostics, I'd suggest a workshop. The control unit is likely defective.

Okay, thanks. I was hoping to avoid a workshop, but it seems I'm out of my depth. I just got a quote of about 1000€ for a new control unit and fitting. I'll post a resolution once it's fixed.
