VelSatis engine control malfunction

I'm having trouble with my 2009 Renault VelSatis, diesel engine. It's got 125546 km on the clock. The engine won't start, and I'm getting an 'engine control malfunction' warning. I've checked fuses, fuel levels, but no luck. I suspect the problem might be related to bad cable connections of the battery. Any ideas before I start tearing things apart?

I had a similar issue with my VelSatis! Drove me nuts. Exact same symptoms – engine light, wouldn't start. Did you check the earth cable connection to the chassis? That was my problem. I was getting all sorts of weird electrical issues before it finally gave up the ghost. Does your check engine light blink?

Interesting! Yes, the check engine light does blink sometimes when I try to start it. Where exactly is that earth cable located? And were there any other symptoms leading up to it, like engine surge or anything?

Right, blinking light is a bad sign. The earth cable is near the battery, bolted to the chassis. In my case, it was corroded to hell. Before it died completely, I had occasional engine surge, like the ECU was getting confused. Honestly, save yourself the headache and get it to a workshop with proper engine diagnostics. Could be ECU failure too, but start with the simple things. Cost me 155€ to sort in the end.

Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated. Turns out you were spot on – it was indeed a bad connection to the battery! Cleaned it up, and she's purring like a kitten again. Saved me a fortune on engine diagnostics. Cheers!
