VelSatis rough running and stalling

I'm new here and having some trouble. I own a 2005 Renault VelSatis with a gasoline engine. It's got 147077 km on the clock. Lately, the engine's been running really rough, and it sometimes stalls when idling. The check engine light is also on, and there's a noticeable jerking when I accelerate. I've checked the spark plugs, and they seem okay. Could it be a defective ignition coil? I saw that the cable or plug connection of the component could be defective. I am not sure what to do!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, but it was a diesel. Check engine light, rough running, the whole shebang. For me, it ended up being a bad coil pack. Have you had the vehicle diagnostics run? That check engine light usually throws a code that can pinpoint the problem. Also, when you checked the spark plugs, did you look closely at the coil connections? A loose or corroded connection can cause all sorts of havoc.

Thanks for the quick reply! Vehicle diagnostics sounds expensive. When you say coil connections, what exactly am I looking for? Is it obvious, or do I need special tools to check?

Vehicle diagnostics can be a bit pricey, but it's usually cheaper than randomly replacing parts. As for the coil connections, I meant checking for any obvious signs of damage – cracks in the plastic, corrosion on the metal parts, or if any of the wires are loose or frayed. You shouldn't need special tools for a visual inspection, just a good light. Honestly, based on your symptoms, I'd say it's worth taking it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose the issue and replace the coil pack if needed. It's not a super complicated job, but it requires some know-how.

Okay, I appreciate the advice! I bit the bullet and took it to a shop. Turns out it was indeed a defective ignition coil, just as I suspected. The cable was also a bit corroded. They replaced the coil, cleaned up the connections, and the car is running smoothly again. The final repair cost was 95€ Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
