Venza transfer case defective gears
Summary of the thread
A 2022 Toyota Venza hybrid owner reported experiencing gearbox slips and unclean shifts, suspecting a transfer case oil wear fault or defective gears. Another participant shared a similar experience with a different vehicle, suggesting that contaminated oil with metal particles could be the cause. The recommended solution was to check for oil leakage and mechanical wear, and possibly perform an oil change. Ultimately, the workshop confirmed defective gears in the transfer case, leading to a repair quote.

Thanks. I'll check for oil leakage and mechanical wear. How quickly did the issue progress on your Volvo?

It was fairly rapid, actually. Started with occasional rough shifts, then progressed to slipping within a couple of weeks. If you're already noticing it, get it checked ASAP. Ignoring it will only cause more damage to the gears. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop and asking them to inspect the transfer case. They'll probably suggest an oil change first, but ask them to check the old oil for metal debris.

Appreciate the insight. Workshop confirmed defective gears in the transfer case. Quoted 330€ for the repair. Thanks for the advice.

Sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my old Volvo XC90. Turned out the transfer case oil was heavily contaminated with metal particles from gear wear. How's your oil level? Any signs of leakage? If you are lucky an oil change can already solve your problem, but if the oil is already brown, you will likely need a new transfer case.
