Venza transmission oil pressure fault

I've got a 2014 Toyota Venza with a gasoline engine and about 131k km on it. Recently, the engine warning light came on, and sometimes the transmission warning light does too. The error code points to a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. I've noticed the gearbox occasionally slips and feels rough when shifting, almost like a grinding noise. It's even gone into emergency mode a couple of times. Could a low gearbox oil level really cause all this?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Toyota Venza experienced engine and transmission warning lights, with error codes indicating a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. The vehicle exhibited symptoms like gearbox slipping, rough shifting, and entering emergency mode. Possible causes included a faulty pressure sensor and low transmission fluid levels. The recommended solution was to have a professional check the fluid level and sensor, leading to the replacement of the sensor and topping off the fluid, resolving the issue.

Interesting. I drive a Venza as well, and I had similar symptoms a while back. The transmission was acting up just as you describe. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty pressure sensor, but the shop also mentioned low oil could trigger the same issues. Think of it like a clogged artery – not enough flow leads to all sorts of problems. Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the fluid level myself yet, to be honest. Where exactly is the dipstick located, or do I need to get under the car to check it properly? And if it is low, is it safe to just top it off, or should I be more cautious?

Okay, so on my Venza, there isn't a dipstick for the transmission. You have to go underneath; there’s a specific fill plug. Given your symptoms and the error code, I strongly recommend getting it checked by a professional instead of topping it off yourself. You don’t want to make things worse. Low fluid could be a symptom of a leak, and overfilling can be just as bad as underfilling; it’s like blood pressure - both high and low are bad.

That makes sense. I appreciate the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were right. It was the pressure sensor, likely triggered by low oil. They replaced the sensor, topped off the fluid, and the total cost was 365€. Runs like new now!
