Veracruz diesel VANOS issue
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Hyundai Veracruz diesel is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, suspected to be due to a fault with the inlet VANOS mechanics. A similar issue in another vehicle was resolved by replacing a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, which was identified as a likely cause. Checking for oil sludge was also suggested, but the primary recommendation was to have the solenoid valve inspected and replaced by a professional. The issue was resolved by replacing the defective camshaft solenoid valve, restoring the vehicle's performance.

Thanks for the info! I haven't checked the oil myself, but my mechanic friend mentioned something about the camshaft solenoid valve. Is that a difficult fix? And what about the oil sludge you mentioned? How would I check for that?

The camshaft solenoid valve isn't too difficult to replace, but it's best left to a professional if you're not experienced. For the oil sludge, check the oil filler cap and dipstick for any thick, black deposits. However, given your symptoms and what your mechanic said, it sounds like the solenoid valve is the most likely culprit. I'd recommend taking it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed and repaired.

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on. It was a defective camshaft solenoid valve. They replaced it, and everything seems to be running smoothly now. The bill came to around 250€. Really appreciate the help!

I had a similar issue with my old BMW 3 Series, although it was the exhaust VANOS in my case. Check engine light was constantly on, and the fuel economy tanked. It turned out to be a faulty camshaft solenoid valve. Have you checked the condition of your oil? Oil sludge can cause problems with the VANOS system as well.
