Verso check engine light hissing noise
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Toyota Verso diesel is experiencing a check engine light, loss of power, a whistling noise, and increased fuel consumption, with suspicions pointing towards the boost pressure actuator or electrical bypass valve. The symptoms worsen when the engine is warm, suggesting a potential issue with the turbo actuator. After checking the vacuum lines and consulting a workshop, the problem was confirmed to be the turbo actuator, which was replaced, resolving the issues.

Good shout. It does seem worse when it's warmed up. I haven't checked the vacuum lines yet, will do that tomorrow. Is the turbo wastegate actuator easy to get to? Is it likely to be the actuator itself, or could it be the pressure sensor?

Access to the turbo/actuator is a bit tight, but doable. Given the symptoms, especially the stalling and hissing, I'd lean towards the actuator being faulty. A faulty pressure sensor usually gives different symptoms, more like erratic boost. Honestly, at that mileage, and with those symptoms, I'd just take it to a workshop for diagnostics before throwing parts at it. Cost me around 250€ to get mine sorted.

Thanks for the advice! I checked the vacuum lines, all seemed okay. Bit the bullet and took it to the workshop. Turns out it was indeed the turbo actuator. They replaced it, and it's running like a champ again. Cheers!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my Verso. Check engine light, loss of power, the works. Did you notice any difference in how it performs when the engine is cold versus when it's warmed up? And have you checked for any obvious leaks in the vacuum lines to the turbo actuator?
