Could you tell me more about what happened with your Renault? Were the symptoms similar to what I described, especially with not being able to engage gears and the grinding noises?

Yeah, similar deal. I never had grinding noises like you mentioned, but the gear selector on the dash was just random letters and numbers. Shifting was totally messed up. Honestly, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop; it sounds like you've got a serious electronics problem there.

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had something similar happen with my old Renault Scenic. The whole dashboard lit up, and the gear indicator went haywire. What a nightmare!
