Verso rough cold starts

Hi, I'm having some trouble with my 2016 Toyota Verso, gasoline engine. It's got about 190k km on the clock. Lately, it's been running really rough when I first start it up in the morning. Struggles to start sometimes too. Could this be a fuel delivery issue, like maybe a faulty cold start injector? I've checked the spark plugs and they seem okay.

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Toyota Verso with 190,000 km is experiencing rough cold starts and occasional difficulty starting, potentially due to a fuel delivery issue. The owner suspects a faulty cold start injector, as the spark plugs appear fine. Suggestions include using a fuel system cleaner and checking the fuel filter, which was recently changed. Ultimately, a professional diagnosis confirmed a defective injection valve, which was replaced, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there, rough cold starts are no fun! I had a similar issue with my old Corolla a while back. Before jumping to injectors, have you tried any fuel system cleaner? Sometimes that can help clear out any gunk that might be causing problems. Also, when was the last time you had your fuel filter changed? A clogged filter can definitely cause poor running, especially on initial start-up. Finally, have you seen any engine warning lights?

Thanks for the reply! I haven't tried a fuel system cleaner yet, that's a good shout. The fuel filter was changed about 30k km ago. No engine warning lights are showing up, which is strange. If it is the injector, is there an easy way to test them, or is it best left to a pro?

No worries! 30k km on the filter should be fine, so that probably isn't it. Since there are no engine lights, it could be something minor, but the rough running and hard starts do point to a fuel delivery issue, most likely the injector. Without proper tools, injectors are tricky to test. Given the symptoms, I reckon it's best to get it to a workshop. They'll be able to properly diagnose it and confirm whether it's the injector or something else entirely. I once tried cleaning my injectors myself on a previous car, and ended up doing more harm than good!

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I took it to a local garage and they confirmed it was a defective injection valve. Final bill came to 515€, so not cheap, but she's running smoothly again now.
