Verso rough running and fuel smell
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Toyota Verso diesel is experiencing rough running, reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and a strong fuel smell, suggesting the engine might be running too rich. The check engine light is on, and the car jerks during acceleration. A possible cause is a faulty injector, which was confirmed after a workshop diagnosis. Replacing the defective injector resolved the issues, restoring the vehicle's performance.

Yeah, it does smell pretty strongly of fuel, especially when starting. I haven't checked the intake manifold for leaks, but I will do that. What exactly was your issue, and how did you fix it?

Sounds very similar to what I experienced. Turned out one of my injectors was defective, causing the rich mixture. Honestly, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed. They can run tests to pinpoint the faulty injector.

Thanks for the advice. Turns out you were spot on. Took it to the workshop, and they confirmed a defective injector. Repair cost was 515€. Runs like new now.

I had something similar with my Verso. Check engine light, rough running, and terrible fuel economy. Does it smell strongly of fuel, especially when it's cold? It could be a rich mixture issue, possibly affecting the catalytic converter in the long run. Have you checked for any obvious leaks around the intake manifold?
