Verso VANOS Solenoid Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Toyota Verso diesel is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, with a diagnostic pointing to a faulty inlet VANOS mechanic. Possible causes include a defect in the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply issue. A suggestion was made to check for oil sludge buildup, which can affect the VANOS solenoid's operation. The issue was resolved by fixing the wiring harness supplying power to the VANOS solenoid, leading to improved engine performance.

Oil sludge? That's interesting. Where exactly should I be looking for that? Is it a common issue with these engines?

Yes, particularly if you're not religious about oil changes. However, it can be difficult to assess, especially without removing things. Considering you have the check engine light and VANOS-related codes, it would be really beneficial to schedule a diagnostics check at a professional shop. If it is the VANOS solenoid valves, it could possibly even be power supply. If the camshaft solenoid valves are faulty (or there is no power supply!) it can throw off your engine timing and cause all sorts of issues. I ended up paying around 250€ for the fix in the end.

Thanks for the insight! I'll get it checked out by a workshop. Turns out it was indeed the VANOS solenoid, and they were able to fix the wiring harness supplying power to it! Running smoothly now.

I had a similar problem with my Verso. Check Engine Light was driving me nuts! It could be oil sludge buildup affecting the VANOS solenoid's operation. Have you checked for that?
