Viano automatic gearbox issues

My 2003 Mercedes Viano with a diesel engine is giving me some serious headaches. I've got about 205836 km on the clock. The automatic gearbox is acting up. Shifting with the paddle shifters is impossible, and the gearbox feels like it's slipping and shifting pretty rough. There's even a grinding noise when it changes gears, and the paddle shifters are responding slower than molasses. The gearbox has gone into emergency mode. I checked the error memory, and it seems the transmission control unit is the culprit. I'm looking at around 1000€ for the transmission repair, which stings. Any thoughts or advice?

I am sorry to hear that you have transmission problems. I had similar automatic gearbox issues with my Mercedes Viano. Is the car computer showing any specific error codes?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the car computer is showing an error related to the transmission control. Did you have the exact same symptoms, especially the paddle shifters not working and the grinding noise? What did you end up doing to resolve it? Was it definitely the transmission control?

Yes, the symptoms sound very familiar. I also had the grinding noise and the paddle shifters were unresponsive. I would suggest visiting a workshop that specializes in transmission repair. They should be able to diagnose the problem precisely. It does sound like the transmission control to me.

Appreciate the confirmation. It's reassuring to hear someone else had the same problem. I'll take it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis and transmission repair. Cheers!
