The error code was pretty specific mentioning the torque converter lock-up clutch directly But I'm still trying to understand how it all ties together Is the torque converter really that critical for the entire automatic transmission operation And if it's failing could that really cause all the symptoms I'm seeing including the engine surge

Yes the torque converter is absolutely critical It's the link between the engine and the transmission especially at lower speeds When the lock-up clutch fails the engine and transmission aren't directly coupled The 'engine surge' is the engine speed fluctuating because the torque converter isn't doing its job At this point a full transmission repair or replacement of the converter is probably the only reliable fix Given the symptoms and the error code I'd say the workshop's diagnosis is likely correct

Thanks a lot for the input It's helpful to get confirmation from someone who's been through a similar ordeal I'm going to proceed with the transmission repair at the workshop Hopefully that'll sort everything out Appreciate the help

Sounds familiar even if it's a different beast I had similar symptoms on my old Volvo XC70 – shuddering slipping and eventually a complete loss of drive The 'engine surge' you describe that's likely the torque converter struggling to lock up properly Think of it like a slipping clutch in a manual car it's not making a solid connection Did the error code specifically call out the torque converter lock-up clutch or was it more general
