Viano auxiliary heater issues
Summary of the thread
The main issue discussed is the failure of the auxiliary heater in a 2000 Mercedes Viano to start, with a suspected defective glow plug. Possible causes include a faulty glow plug, a malfunctioning temperature sensor, or a blocked heater core. Suggested solutions involve checking the ventilation system, blower motor, and fuses, and ultimately having the vehicle diagnosed at a workshop. The diagnosis confirmed the glow plug as the problem, with a repair cost of approximately 440€.

Temperature sensor, eh? Where exactly is that located? And would a faulty temperature sensor really stop the car heater from even trying to start? I was under the impression it would just affect the car heater output temperature, not its ability to initiate.

Yes, a faulty temperature sensor can prevent the heater from starting to protect itself from potential damage. As for location, it varies, but it's often near the auxiliary car heater unit itself or integrated into the ventilation system ductwork. Honestly, with those symptoms, it's probably best to get it diagnosed properly at a workshop. Could save you time and money in the long run. If it's indeed the glow plug it is going to cost you approximately 440€

Cheers. Appreciate the insight. Dropped it off at the workshop this morning, and you were spot on, glow plug. They're quoting 440€ for the job, so looks like I'm in for it.

Could be the glow plug. If it's not heating up the fuel properly, the heater won't ignite. Have you checked the ventilation system, blower motor or car heater in general? A faulty temperature sensor might also cause issues and prevent activation to avoid overheating. The heater core could be blocked too. It's also worth checking the basics like fuses before digging deeper.
