Viano Diesel Glow Plug Issue

My Mercedes Viano, build year 2020, diesel engine, has an issue. The preheating lamp stays on, and the check engine light is lit. The diagnostic error indicates a glow plug malfunction. Is a defective glow plug the most probable cause, or should I investigate other potential factors before replacement?

Glow plug, eh? I had a similar issue with my Vito diesel. Preheating lamp wouldn't shut off, check engine light glaring. Glow plugs were the problem for me. Before you jump in, have you checked the glow plug relay? What about the wiring to the glow plugs themselves? A simple visual inspection can sometimes save you grief. Did you measure the resistance of the glow plugs with a multimeter?

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the suggestions regarding the glow plug relay and wiring. I intend to inspect these components soon. When you experienced this issue, did the diagnostic error specifically identify which glow plug was faulty, or did it indicate a general glow plug malfunction? I am curious if the error pinpointed the problem or if further testing was required to isolate the defective plug.

Good question! For me, the diagnostic was pretty specific it pointed right at glow plug number 3. Even with that info, I'd still advise a proper test. Sometimes the diagnostics can be a little optimistic. If you're not equipped to do it yourself, a trip to a trusted workshop might be worth it. Cost me around 440€ all in.

I appreciate your assistance and clarification. Your experience has been invaluable in confirming my suspicions and guiding my diagnostic approach. Based on the error code and your recommendation, I will proceed to have the glow plugs professionally tested and replaced at the workshop. Your insights have saved me time and effort.
