Viano electric steering column adjustment problem
Summary of the thread
A Mercedes Viano from 2001 experienced an electric steering column adjustment issue, with the error memory indicating a defect. The suspected cause was a faulty cable or plug connection. A suggestion was made to check for corrosion in the connector under the seat, which was confirmed as the problem. After cleaning and reseating the corroded connector, the electric adjustment function was restored.

Thanks for the hint. Which connector exactly are you referring to? And what do you mean by mechanical fault? How would I diagnose that?

I mean the main connector block for the electric steering. As for the mechanical fault, the motor might be getting stuck or have worn gears. Honestly, given the electric steering issue, you are better off having a workshop take a look at it. It could be more than just a simple fix.

I appreciate the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were right; it was a corroded connector. They cleaned it and re-seated it. The electric adjustment is now working. Total cost 95€. Thanks again.

I had a similar steering issue with my Vito. Check the connector under the seat; they are prone to corrosion. Is the steering failure permanent or intermittent? If it's intermittent, it might point to a mechanical fault in the adjustment motor itself.
