Viano engine refuses to start

My 2009 Mercedes Viano with a gasoline engine is driving me nuts! I've got 182941 km on the clock, and now the engine refuses to start! The engine light is on and I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the engine control. Could it be the fuel injection being a pain again? I did notice some engine surge a while back. I suspect the ECU issue could be the culprit. Any ideas before I set this thing on fire?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Mercedes Viano with a gasoline engine refused to start, and the engine light was on, suggesting a potential issue with the engine control unit (ECU). The problem was suspected to be related to the fuel injection system or ECU. A suggestion was made to check the battery cable connections, as loose connections can cause power loss to the ECU and prevent the engine from starting. After cleaning and tightening the battery cables, the engine started successfully, resolving the issue without needing a new ECU.

I understand your frustration. I had a similar issue with my older Volvo. The check engine light was illuminated, and the car wouldn't start. Have you checked the battery cable connections? Poor connections can cause a multitude of ECU issues and prevent the engine from starting.

Battery cables, huh? I wouldn't have thought of that! So, just to be clear, you're saying loose connections there could actually stop the whole thing from firing up? Even with a good battery? Tell me more!

Yes, that is correct. In my case, the loose connection was causing intermittent power loss to the ECU. This prevented the fuel injection system from working correctly, leading to a no-start condition. While it might not be the only possible cause, it's a simple thing to check before going to a workshop. If the connections are clean and tight, then it may be time to consult with a professional.

You absolute legend! You were spot on! Turns out, the cable connections to the battery were indeed dodgy. Cleaned them up, tightened everything, and she fired right up! Cost me 155€ at the workshop, but definitely cheaper than a new ECU. Thanks so much for the help!
