Volt low coolant

I'm a bit freaked. I have a 2017 Chevy Volt (hybrid engine) and the check engine light popped on. I pulled the codes and it's saying something about low coolant. I checked the coolant reservoir, and sure enough, it's way low! I haven’t noticed any puddles or anything. Could this be a head gasket issue, like when you keep adding oil to an old beater, or is it more likely just a leak somewhere?

Summary of the thread

The initial concern was a check engine light indicating low coolant in a 2017 Chevy Volt. The coolant reservoir was found to be significantly low, raising concerns about a potential head gasket issue or a leak. It was suggested to check both the engine and battery coolant levels, as the Volt has separate systems. Ultimately, a small leak in a hose was identified and repaired at a shop, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Low coolant in a hybrid can be tricky. Is it just the engine coolant, or is the battery coolant also low? Those Volts have separate systems. Check both reservoirs. If only the engine coolant is low, a small leak is the most probable cause. Have you checked around the water pump?

Good point about the battery coolant! I'll check that first thing in the morning. I haven't specifically looked at the water pump, but is it easy to get to? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can tackle myself, or if I'm better off just taking it to a shop. I'm pretty handy, but not a mechanic by any means.

Given it's a sealed hybrid system, and you're seeing a consistent coolant loss, I'd lean toward a small leak somewhere in the system. It's probably best to get it pressure tested at a shop to pinpoint the source, rather than chasing it yourself. Those systems can be a pain to bleed air pockets from too.

You were spot on about the leak! Took it to the shop, and they found a tiny leak in a hose. Cost me 52€ to fix. Thanks for the advice about taking it in; probably saved me a ton of time and frustration!
