Volvo S40 starting problem
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Volvo S40 diesel is experiencing starting problems, occasional stalling when idling, and an illuminated check engine light. The issue is suspected to be related to a defective camshaft sensor. After further investigation and a visit to a workshop, it was confirmed that the camshaft sensor and the encoder wheel on the camshafts were faulty, leading to a repair.

Thank you for your suggestion. I will investigate this. If it was the crankshaft sensor on your Opel, what were the specific fault codes?

I cannot recall the exact fault codes. Given the stalling and ignition timing issues, coupled with the check engine light, it is likely the encoder wheel on the camshafts is defective. I recommend a visit to a reputable workshop.

Thank you for the advice. After taking it to the workshop, it was indeed the camshaft sensor. The final repair bill was 695€. The garage confirmed the encoder wheel on camshafts was faulty.

The symptoms you describe mirror an issue I had with my Opel Astra. It turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor. Have you checked that as well?
