Volvo S80 DPF Issues

I've got a 2007 Volvo S80 diesel that's throwing me some curveballs. Recently, the speedometer's been lighting up with a warning, and the engine power feels low. To add insult to injury, there's noticeable smoke when I accelerate, accompanied by a strong exhaust smell. She’s done almost 200k km. My diagnostic tool points towards a 'diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low' error. My gut feeling and some research tells me the exhaust back pressure sensor might be the culprit, triggering the whole cascade of problems. Has anyone wrestled with similar DPF issues on their S80? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Volvo S80 diesel is experiencing issues with low engine power, warning lights, smoke, and a strong exhaust smell. The diagnostic tool indicates a 'diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low' error, suggesting a potential problem with the exhaust back pressure sensor. The suggested solution is to inspect and possibly replace the sensor, which resolved the issue after replacement.

I had a similar issue with my S80 a while back with the same symptoms: warning light and limp mode. I’d start by checking the sensor itself for any obvious damage, loose connections, or frayed wires. Sometimes it's the simple things. Is your car trying to do a DPF regeneration often?

Thanks for the insight! I'll definitely give the sensor a thorough once-over for any physical damage. As for the DPF regeneration, how can you tell if the car wants one? Is there a visual indicator or something in the computer?

It's usually not very apparent that the car is performing DPF regeneration. That’s why the computer usually catches the issue and throws a code. Judging by your symptoms (smoke and exhaust smell), it’s just that: the sensor has failed and the ECU cannot properly manage the regeneration process. I would take it to a trusted mechanic rather than potentially damaging your catalytic converter.

A new exhaust back pressure sensor later and everything is working smoothly now. The total cost was around 245€, all-in (parts and labor). Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
