Volvo S90 Inlet VANOS Defect

I own a 2021 Volvo S90 with a gasoline engine. I am experiencing issues with what I suspect is the inlet VANOS mechanics. The check engine light is illuminated, and fuel consumption is higher than usual at 169189 km. Could this be a defect in the camshaft solenoid valves or a power supply interruption?

That does sound like a potential VANOS issue. I had a similar problem with my old BMW 5 Series. Same symptoms: check engine light and increased fuel consumption. In my case, it ended up being a faulty camshaft position sensor throwing everything off.

Yes, the error codes pointed towards the inlet camshaft. Beyond the light and the fuel, I noticed some rough idling from time to time. Given your Volvo's mileage and the symptoms, I strongly advise having a workshop check the inlet camshaft and timing chain.

Thank you for the information. I took your advice and visited a workshop. As suspected, there was a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves, which has been replaced. The repair cost 250€.
