Volvo V40 diesel power loss fault code
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Volvo V40 diesel experienced a significant loss of engine power and displayed a dashboard error, with a fault code suggesting a potential issue. The problem was suspected to be caused by a faulty chip tune, possibly installed by a previous owner. The recommended solution was to visit a mechanic to diagnose the issue and check the car's error memory. Ultimately, the faulty chip tune was confirmed and removed, and the ECU was reflashed, resolving the power loss issue.

Cheers for the quick response! No, no mention of any modifications by the previous owner. I've only had it a couple of months, and it's been running fine up until now. Is there any way to check for sure if it's a faulty chip?

Unfortunately, there's no easy way to confirm a dodgy chip tune without specialized equipment. It's like trying to diagnose a heart problem without an EKG. However, given the symptoms and the fault code, it is likely the issue. I would recommend visiting a trustworthy mechanic to check your car diagnostic and read the error memory of your car. I bet you will need a check engine reset afterwards.

Thanks for the insight! It's a pain, but at least I have a better idea of what I'm dealing with. Took it to the garage, and you were spot on! It was indeed a faulty chip tune. Had to get it removed and the ECU reflashed. Cost me 180€, but the car runs like new again!

That sounds incredibly frustrating! I had similar symptoms on my V40: reduced power and a check engine light. It felt like driving through treacle. Did the previous owner mention anything about aftermarket modifications when you bought the car?
