Volvo V40 Gearbox Problems

Gearbox issues with my 2004 Volvo V40 diesel. Paddle shifters are unresponsive, gearbox slipping, shifting uncleanly, and grinding noises during gear changes. Sometimes the paddle shifters respond with a huge delay, and occasionally the gearbox goes into emergency mode. Error code points towards a defective transmission control unit. Anyone experienced something similar?

Sounds rough! I had a similar experience with my old BMW 3 Series. The symptoms were the same - gearbox slipping, shifting problems, emergency mode, and error codes pointing to a control unit - the underlying cause was a faulty sensor. Have you checked the sensor data to see if any readings are off before suspecting the control unit?

Thanks for the tip! Which sensors did you check specifically? I haven't dug into the sensor data yet, I was mostly focusing on the error codes, but I'm happy to investigate further before I spend any money.

On the BMW, it was the transmission speed sensors that were giving dodgy readings. But given that the error code points directly to the control unit on your Volvo, it may well be the control unit defective. I'd advise getting it checked out by a specialist to confirm. I ended up needing a new control unit anyway.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to a workshop, and after thorough diagnosis, they confirmed it was indeed the transmission control unit. Cost me around 1000€ to replace, but now it's running smoothly again.
