Volvo V50 EGR Valve Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Volvo V50 diesel is experiencing several issues, including a check engine light, reduced engine power, black smoke during acceleration, rough idling, increased fuel consumption, jerky acceleration, and a loud hissing sound. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the EGR valve, which could lead to further complications like catalytic converter damage. It is recommended to have the EGR valve checked and repaired promptly to prevent additional issues such as clogging the DPF.

Yes, the jerking is pretty bad, especially at lower speeds. It feels like the engine is briefly starved of fuel. The jerking and hissing together are unnerving. Did your Megane do the same, and what was the cause?

Yep, jerking was definitely part of the fun. Hissing, I didn't have. EGR valve was the culprit for me, eventually. With all your symptoms, I'd say it's almost certainly that. Get it checked at a workshop quickly, before it causes more issues, like clogging up your DPF!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Your insights were invaluable. I had the EGR valve repaired at the workshop, and it cost me 355€.

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my Renault Megane, although it was a petrol engine. Reduced power and the check engine light were the first signs. Is the car jerking badly?
