Volvo V50 Electrical Fault

I'm at my wit's end with my 2009 Volvo V50 diesel. Lately, it's been throwing some seriously weird errors. I get sporadic error messages related to the driving mode, and sometimes the warning lights just light up like a Christmas tree for no reason. Even stranger, the audio and navigation systems will randomly cut out, or the whole control unit seems to freeze up. I've checked the error memory with an OBD-II reader and it definitely shows a stored error, but nothing specific enough to pinpoint the problem. The car has 145951 km on the clock. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any ideas where to even begin looking?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Volvo V50 diesel is experiencing sporadic error messages, random warning lights, and issues with the audio and navigation systems. The problem may be due to a defective cable connection to the control unit, possibly within the BUS system. The suggested solution is to have a workshop perform diagnostics to identify and repair the faulty connection, which resolved the issue in this case.

That sounds frustrating! I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra. I was chasing a ghost in the machine for weeks. Random failures of different systems, error lights popping up... drove me nuts! Have you checked the BUS system? In my case, it turned out to be a defective cable connection to the control unit. Might be worth a look.

A defective cable connection, huh? Interesting. How did you eventually track it down? Was it something you could see visually, or did you have to use a multimeter or something to test for continuity? And which control unit was giving you trouble? I'm not even sure where to start looking on my V50.

It was a real pain to diagnose! I eventually took it to a workshop because I couldn't figure it out myself. They used some fancy diagnostics to pinpoint the exact cable. It wasn't visually obvious; the cable looked fine, but apparently, there was some corrosion or something causing a bad connection. So, no, I wasn't able to fix it myself. They found the problem to be in the BUS system. So I suggest going to the workshop.

Thanks a lot for the insights! I took your advice and brought it to my local garage. They ran some diagnostics and, sure enough, it was a dodgy cable connection to the control unit as you suggested! Cost me 155€ to get it sorted, but at least the gremlins are gone. Appreciate the help!
