Volvo V50 exhaust leak symptoms

My 2008 Volvo V50 with a gasoline engine is throwing a wrench in my plans. Check engine light's on, power's gone, and it's guzzling fuel. I'm thinking it's the exhaust temperature sensor. Anyone else run into this?

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2008 Volvo V50 experiencing a check engine light, loss of power, and increased fuel consumption. The initial suspicion is an issue with the exhaust temperature sensor. A possible cause identified is a leak in the exhaust system, which can affect sensor readings and lead to these symptoms. The recommended solution is to conduct a smoke test to locate the leak, which in this case revealed a small crack near the catalytic converter, requiring a new sensor and welding to resolve the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar. Had a similar issue with my old Peugeot 308. Same symptoms – check engine light and all. Could be a leak in the exhaust system messing with the sensor readings.

A leak? Where exactly should I be looking for this leak, and how would that affect the temp sensor?

A small crack or loose connection anywhere in the exhaust can throw off the readings. The ECU then thinks the exhaust is too hot or cold, triggering the limp mode and extra fuel. Best bet is to get it smoke tested at a workshop.

Smoke test it is. Thanks for the heads-up! Turns out you were spot on. Small crack near the cat. New sensor and a bit of welding, 265€ and I'm back on the road!

I have a Volvo V50 petrol and when it accelerates faster it vibrates quite a bit, you can only hear it inside, the sound comes from approximately the direction of the catalytic converter, has anyone encountered something like this?

Check if the heat shield around the catalytic converter is loose or damaged, as this can cause vibrations and noise during acceleration. If the heat shield is secure, inspect the exhaust system for any loose or damaged components. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
