Volvo V70 Tire Pressure ABS Steering Issues

Volvo gurus, I'm tearing my hair out. My 2013 V70 diesel, with only 21426 km, suddenly has the tire pressure warning light on. I've checked the pressures manually - all fine, even topped them up. But the light persists! What's worse, the ABS lamp is now on, the steering wheel vibrates like crazy, and the power steering feels completely dead. Could a faulty tire sensor REALLY cause all this chaos?

Summary of the thread

A 2013 Volvo V70 diesel is experiencing multiple issues: a persistent tire pressure warning light, an ABS warning light, vibrating steering, and non-functional power steering. Despite manually checking and topping up tire pressures, the problems persist. A potential cause could be a faulty tire valve leading to incorrect tire pressure readings, which might trigger the ABS system and affect steering. It is advised to have the vehicle inspected at a workshop to check the tires and valves to prevent further damage.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That's a nasty combination of symptoms! I have a V70 myself. While I didn't have the ABS light issue, the vibrating steering wheel and heavy steering do ring a bell. It started with a persistent low tire pressure warning despite my tires being properly inflated. Have you checked the tire itself extremely carefully for any signs of a puncture, even a very slow one? Also, did you inspect the tire valve?

Thanks for the quick reply! A slow puncture was my first thought, so I gave each tire a REALLY good once-over. Nothing obvious – no nails, screws, or anything sticking out. I even sprayed them with soapy water to look for tiny bubbles, but nada. The valve looked okay at first glance, but honestly, I didn't examine it with a magnifying glass. What exactly should I be looking for on the valve?

Okay, if you've ruled out punctures, I'd say it's highly probable you're dealing with a defective valve causing pressure loss that the TPMS is picking up. In my case, a faulty valve was indeed the culprit. The shaking and heavy steering are likely due to the ABS system freaking out because of the incorrect tire pressure reading, or differences between tires. I would avoid driving the car in that condition. The repair bill came to around 280€ in my case. I'd strongly suggest getting it to a workshop to get the tires and valves inspected properly before you do any further damage.

You've confirmed my deepest fears! Sounds like a trip to the shop is unavoidable. Thanks so much for sharing your experience; knowing someone else had the exact same weird combo of issues makes me feel a bit less crazy. I'll let you know what the garage finds. Hopefully, it's 'just' the valve and nothing more sinister. Fingers crossed!
