Volvo XC70 Carly Compatibility Issue

I own a 2007 Volvo XC70 with a gasoline engine and 221,000 km mileage. I'm experiencing an issue where the check engine light is on, but my Carly device won't read the fault codes. I received a message indicating that I need an additional component for Carly to work properly. Can anyone advise on what exactly I need to get Carly to function correctly with my vehicle? Also, why wasn't I informed about this requirement when I purchased Carly?
