VW Amarok NOx Catalyst Failure & Exhaust Leak Alert

My check engine light just came on in my 2010 VW Amarok diesel (34289km). The error scan showed problems with emissions and I can hear exhaust leaks. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms related to a failing NOx catalyst? Getting nervous about repair costs after previous bad experiences at mechanics. Want to know what to expect and what questions to ask before taking it in.

Had the same issue with my 2013 VW Touareg TDI. The symptoms matched exactly, check engine light and exhaust noise. Turned out the catalytic converter was failing, causing increased NOx emissions and affecting overall fuel efficiency. The exhaust system inspection revealed cracks near the flex pipe leading to the catalytic converter. These leaks were allowing exhaust gases to escape before reaching the catalyst, throwing off the emissions sensors. The damage was significant enough that simply patching the exhaust leak would not solve the underlying NOx emissions problem. The repair required replacing both the catalytic converter and the connected exhaust sections. This was not a quick fix, the entire system needed proper inspection since exhaust leaks can indicate broader system stress. The mechanic checked all mounting points and hangers since worn components can cause misalignment leading to these failures. Worth noting this is a serious issue requiring prompt attention. Driving with a failing catalyst can damage other engine components and significantly impact fuel efficiency. When getting it checked, request a complete exhaust system pressure test to identify all potential leak points. Make sure they check the oxygen sensors as well, since they often need replacement when the catalyst fails.

Thanks for sharing your experience. That sounds very similar to what I am dealing with. After seeing the issue in my Amarok, I took it to a repair shop and they confirmed problems with the NOx catalyst and exhaust system. The car diagnostics showed high nitrogen oxides readings just like yours. Curious, do you remember roughly how much the total repair cost came to? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix or have you noticed any other emission-related problems? My catalytic converter definitely needs replacing but want to make sure I am getting a fair price and addressing all potential issues at once.

Good news about your Amarok emissions concerns. After getting my Touareg fixed, the automotive repair work completely resolved the NOx storage catalyst aging issue. The mechanic found and repaired the exhaust leak for 265€, which included pressure testing the entire system. The air quality readings returned to normal, and the check engine light has stayed off since. The catalytic converter replacement was actually not needed in my case, the main problem was the exhaust leak affecting the emissions system readings. Since the repair, the exhaust is whisper quiet and fuel efficiency has improved noticeably. No further emission-related issues have occurred in over a year of driving. Based on my experience, make sure they thoroughly check all exhaust components and mounting points before automatically replacing the catalytic converter. Sometimes what appears to be catalyst failure can be resolved by fixing upstream leaks in the system.

I decided to take my Amarok to a trusted mechanic after reading about your experience. The car diagnostics revealed exactly what you mentioned, the exhaust leak was the primary culprit affecting the emissions system readings. The repair cost came to 320€ for fixing the leak and replacing some worn mounting brackets. The mechanic did a thorough check of the NOx catalyst and surprisingly found it was still functioning within acceptable ranges once the exhaust leak was sealed. The nitrogen oxides levels dropped significantly after the repair, and my fuel efficiency has improved by about 15%. The air quality sensor readings are now back to normal and the check engine light has stayed off for the past two weeks. Really glad I had them do the full system inspection rather than jumping straight to replacing the catalytic converter. The automotive repair turned out to be much simpler and less expensive than I initially feared. Will keep monitoring things but so far everything is running smoothly. Thanks again for helping me avoid an unnecessary catalyst replacement.
