VW Amarok Trans Sensor Issues: Slipping & Grinding Gears

Having issues with my 2011 VW Amarok automatic transmission that seems to point toward a transmission sensor problem. The gearbox occasionally slips and makes grinding noises during gear changes. It recently went into limp mode and the transmission warning light came on. The transmission oil level was checked and is correct. I suspect the transmission pressure sensor might be faulty, but would like to hear from others who had similar symptoms. Has anyone dealt with this specific issue? What was the actual problem and repair solution in your case? Also interested in typical repair costs for transmission sensor replacement if that turned out to be the culprit. Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Had a similar transmission fault on my 2013 VW Passat with the automatic transmission. As someone with moderate experience working on cars, I initially thought it was just a sensor issue when the transmission warning appeared. The symptoms matched yours, grinding during shifts and occasional slipping. After the transmission went into limp mode, I took it to my regular workshop. They performed a full diagnostic and discovered the oil sensor was giving false readings. While the gauge showed correct levels, the actual oil level was significantly low. The repair involved: Complete transmission oil level check with proper equipment, Replacement of faulty pressure gauge and oil sensor, Fresh transmission fluid, Computer reset to clear fault codes Total cost was 365€ for parts and labor. Since the fix, the transmission has been shifting smoothly with no warning lights. To better assist with your case, could you share: Current mileage, When was the last transmission service done, Are there any other warning lights active, Does the problem occur more frequently when the engine is cold or hot This information would help determine if your issue follows the same pattern or might have a different root cause.

Last service was completed 2 months ago and the transmission was checked thoroughly with no issues found at that time. The problem started showing up about 2 weeks ago. The pressure sensor replacement cost seems reasonable compared to what I was quoted. The transmission warning light is the only active warning, and the issue occurs mainly when the engine is warm. The oil pressure readings fluctuate sometimes, suggesting the pressure switch might indeed be failing. When my regular workshop tested the transmission oil level and pressure readings, they got inconsistent results, which aligns with your experience regarding false sensor data. I will schedule a follow-up visit to have them specifically check the oil sensor and pressure gauge components you mentioned.

Thanks for the additional details. Based on your description, this does sound very similar to what I experienced with my Passat. The fluctuating pressure readings combined with warm engine symptoms strongly point to a sensor fault rather than a mechanical issue. In my case, the pressure switch started giving erratic readings about 3 weeks after a routine service. The transmission fault warnings would come and go, which made diagnosis tricky at first. The inconsistent oil pressure readings you mentioned are a telltale sign, exactly what happened with mine. A few observations from my repair experience: The sensor problem progressively got worse over time, Pressure gauge readings became more erratic as the engine warmed up, Transmission shifts were notably rough above operating temperature, The fault codes stored in the computer directly linked to the oil pressure sensor Getting the sensor replaced early likely prevented additional transmission wear. The repair was straightforward and resolved all symptoms. The transmission has performed flawlessly for 40000km since the fix. Make sure your workshop checks the wiring harness connected to the sensor as well, in some cases corrosion at the connector can cause similar symptoms.

Thanks everyone for your input. Wanted to provide a quick update on my Amarok transmission situation. After getting your feedback about the sensor issues, I had my workshop do a thorough check focused on the transmission sensor and pressure gauge components. Turns out the pressure switch was indeed failing, causing those inconsistent readings and false transmission warnings. Just had the repair done yesterday: New pressure sensor installed, Oil level verified with specialized equipment, Complete system diagnostic, Transmission computer reset Total repair cost was 390€, which felt fair considering the parts and labor involved. The transmission is now shifting perfectly with no warning lights or grinding noises. The pressure readings are stable and consistent, even after the engine reaches full operating temperature. Really appreciate the advice about checking this early before it could cause additional wear. Will definitely keep monitoring the transmission oil level and pressure readings during future services to catch any potential issues early.
