VW Arteon Hybrid Misfires & Stalling Due to Bad Coils

My car has been acting up lately with rough running and stalling issues, plus the check engine light just came on. When I hit the gas, it jerks and feels unstable. Previous mechanic visit left me skeptical, but symptoms point to a possible coil failure. Anyone dealt with similar ignition system problems on a 2021 VW Arteon Hybrid (72700km)? Looking for advice on trusted repair shops and what to expect cost-wise for this type of fix.

Summary of the thread

A 2021 VW Arteon Hybrid was experiencing rough running, stalling, and a check engine light, suggesting ignition system issues. The symptoms pointed to possible coil failure, similar to issues experienced by another user with a VW Passat GTE Hybrid, where failing ignition coils and worn spark plugs caused misfires. The recommended solution involved replacing ignition coils and spark plugs, cleaning coil connectors, and performing a full system diagnostic scan. After these repairs, the Arteon ran smoothly without further issues, highlighting the importance of addressing ignition problems promptly to prevent additional damage.

I experienced similar symptoms last year with my 2018 VW Passat GTE Hybrid. The engine hesitation and unstable acceleration turned out to be a combination of failing ignition coils and worn spark plugs causing misfires. Initially thought it was a minor issue, but the diagnostic revealed two coils had deteriorated significantly, affecting the ignition system performance. The spark plugs showed excessive wear, contributing to the rough running condition. Multiple cylinder misfires were logged in the ECU. The repair required: Replacing all ignition coils, Installing new spark plugs, Cleaning the coil connectors, Full system diagnostic scan This was a serious issue that needed immediate attention since continued driving could have damaged the catalytic converter. After the repair, the engine ran smoothly with no more hesitation or stalling. Your symptoms strongly align with coil failure. Given your Arteon has similar architecture to my Passat, suggest getting it checked soon before secondary problems develop.

Thanks for sharing that detailed experience. The symptoms you described match mine exactly, especially the engine stalling and misfire issues. My check engine light started flashing last week while accelerating, which really got me worried. Did the repair fully resolve the problems? Would be helpful to know the total cost you paid for fixing those failing ignition coils and spark plugs. Also curious if you encountered any related issues since the repair was done? I want to budget properly and make sure I fix everything at once rather than having to go back multiple times.

After getting the ignition coil fixed, my Passat GTE has been running perfectly with no engine stalling or hesitation issues. The vehicle diagnostics confirmed it was just a defective ignition coil causing the problems, specifically a faulty cable connection. The repair was straightforward and cost 95€ to fix the connection, much less than I initially feared. Since the repair three months ago, the engine performance has been smooth with no check engine light or rough running problems. The quick fix prevented any potential damage to other components. If your symptoms match what I experienced, focusing on the ignition system is definitely the right approach. For your peace of mind, get a full diagnostic scan done. While my issue was just the coil connection, having a complete check ensures no related spark plug or other ignition components need attention. This helps avoid repeat visits to the shop.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. I took my Arteon to a recommended shop last week and had them check the ignition system. The diagnostic scan showed two failing coil packs and the mechanic found carbon buildup on the spark plugs. The total repair came to 450€ including parts and labor. They replaced all four ignition coils and spark plugs as a preventive measure. The check engine light is now off and the car runs perfectly smooth, no more jerking or stalling when accelerating. The shop also cleaned the coil connectors and did a full system check to make sure there were no other underlying issues. Really glad I got this fixed before it caused damage to other components. Definitely worth paying a bit more for a thorough job rather than just replacing the obviously faulty parts. The whole process took about 3 hours and the mechanics walked me through exactly what they found and fixed. Much better experience than my previous shop visit.
