VW Arteon Power Steering Issues, Signs & Cost Guide

Recently my power steering started acting up, steering feels heavy and the wheel vibrates while driving. The steering feels spongy and there is an error code stored. The power steering pump might be failing but my last mechanic visit left me skeptical about repairs. Car specs: 2017 VW Arteon, Gasoline engine, 22177km Has anyone experienced similar steering issues? Looking for advice on common causes and ballpark repair costs before heading back to a shop. Want to make sure I get fair treatment this time around.

Had the same power steering problems with my 2014 VW Passat. The steering wheel became increasingly difficult to turn, especially during parking maneuvers, accompanied by vibrations at highway speeds. The issue turned out to be a faulty connection in the steering column wiring harness. The power steering system was getting intermittent electrical signals, causing the steering assist to cut out out of nowhere. While diagnosing, the mechanic found the pressure hose was also showing signs of wear but hadnt failed yet. The repair involved: Testing the power steering control module, Replacing damaged wiring in the steering column, Installing new connectors at the steering rack, Complete system diagnostic reset This was a serious electrical issue that required specialized diagnostic equipment. Leaving it unfixed could have led to complete power steering failure and unsafe driving conditions. The steering rack and pump were actually fine, it was purely an electrical connection problem. Consider having a shop specifically check the wiring and connections before replacing expensive components like the pump. The error code should help narrow down if its electrical or mechanical.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the steering column wiring. Your case sounds very similar to mine. Did you remember what the total repair cost was? Also curious if you have had any steering system issues since getting it fixed. My VW Arteon still has the heavy steering problem and I noticed some hydraulic fluid spots on the garage floor recently. Wondering if I should expect the pressure hose replacement too, since you mentioned yours was wearing out during the diagnosis.

Glad I could help with my previous experience. After seeing the mechanic last week, the power steering on my Passat is working perfectly again. The electric steering assist now engages smoothly without any vibration or heaviness. The repair was fairly straightforward, just 95€ to fix a loose connection in the steering column wiring. The mechanic found a damaged plug that was causing intermittent power loss to the steering rack components. Once replaced, all steering functions returned to normal. Regarding your fluid spots, that definitely points to a different issue than what I had with the electrical system. Since your Arteon uses a hydraulic power steering setup, those spots likely indicate a leak in the pressure hoses or steering rack seals. Would strongly recommend getting those checked soon, as low fluid can damage the power steering pump. Have had zero steering-related problems in the six months since my repair. The steering wheel now turns effortlessly and the system operates exactly as it should.

Thanks for the input. Finally got my steering issues sorted out yesterday. Took it to a different mechanic who specializes in VW electric steering systems. Turns out there were multiple problems: Cracked pressure hose leaking fluid, Worn steering rack seal, Loose wiring connector at the steering column Total repair came to 485€ including parts and labor. More than expected but at least everything is documented and properly fixed now. The steering wheel feels solid again with no more vibrations or heavy spots. Much better experience than my last mechanic who just wanted to replace the entire power steering pump without proper diagnosis. The new shop took time to check all components and showed me the damaged parts. Really glad I asked here first and learned about the potential wiring issues. Helped me have a more informed conversation with the mechanic about all possible causes rather than just accepting the first diagnosis.
