Thanks for such a detailed explanation of your Passat issue. Recently experienced identical symptoms with my Arteon, would suddenly die or refuse to start. Turns out it was also an immobilizer bypass problem. Took it to an electronics specialist who sorted the key programming and cleared the security light errors. Mind sharing what the final repair cost was in your case? Also curious if youve had any repeat issues since getting it fixed? My mechanic warned the problem could resurface if the anti-theft system acts up again.

After taking my Passat to the electronics specialist mentioned earlier, the key programming issue with the immobilizer system was completely resolved, costing 45€ for the reprogramming service. The anti-theft system has been working flawlessly since the repair, with no recurring problems starting the car. The key signal now communicates properly with the car immobilizer every time. Looking back, choosing a workshop specializing in automotive security systems was crucial for properly diagnosing and fixing the issue. Regular mechanics often lack the specific diagnostic tools needed for these electronic faults. Regarding your concern about potential future issues, as long as the key programming was done correctly using proper equipment, the fix should be permanent. The remote start function should also work reliably now that the immobilizer is properly calibrated to recognize your key.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies. Just wanted to update on my Arteon situation. Took it to an electronics specialist after seeing these responses. The entire immobilizer bypass and key programming service cost me 680€, quite a bit more than expected but worth every cent. The technician found multiple car immobilizer faults that were causing the starting problems. The key signal was weak and the security system kept activating out of nowhere. They completely reprogrammed the system and replaced a faulty antenna ring near the ignition. Car starts perfectly now, no more unusual shutdowns or security light warnings. The specialist explained everything clearly and showed me all the error codes they cleared. Much better experience than with the regular mechanic who couldnt diagnose the problem. Definitely recommend finding a proper car electronics expert for these types of issues rather than a general repair shop. Saves time and prevents potential misdiagnosis.

Had the same starting issues on my 2014 VW Passat TSI. The symptoms match a typical anti-theft system malfunction where the immobilizer fault prevents proper communication between the key signal and the ignition control module. The root cause in my case was corrupted key programming data in the immobilizer system. A regular mechanic might miss this since it requires specific diagnostic equipment to detect the key signal interference. This is a serious issue that needs attention from a workshop specializing in automotive electronics. The fix involved reprogramming the key transponder and recalibrating the ignition control unit. The entire repair process took about 4 hours since they had to clear multiple error codes and verify the system was functioning correctly. Look for a shop that specifically advertises key programming and immobilizer diagnostics services. The issue will likely worsen if left unaddressed, potentially leaving you stranded when the anti-theft system fully fails to recognize the key. Suggest having them check: Key transponder signal strength, Immobilizer antenna ring, Engine control unit communication, Battery voltage levels
