VW Atlas Glow Plug Malfunction Causes Smoke & Warning Signs

Having trouble with my 2017 VW Atlas diesel engine lately. The preheat light stays on constantly and engine light keeps popping up. Noticed dark smoke coming from exhaust during acceleration. Car has 119462km on it. Mechanic mentioned something about glow plugs but I am not really confident in their assessment given previous experiences. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would appreciate input on the actual problem and roughly what I should expect to pay for repairs.

Had the exact same symptoms on my 2014 VW Touareg TDI. The constant glow plug light and engine warning, combined with black smoke during acceleration, pointed directly to failing glow plugs and their wiring harness. The mechanic found corroded connections at the glow plug wiring harness, which caused inconsistent voltage supply. This led to incomplete diesel fuel combustion during cold starts and vehicle stalling issues. After replacing the entire glow plug set and harness assembly, the engine misfire problems disappeared completely. This is actually a common issue with these diesel engines as they age. The fix requires replacing not just the glow plugs but often the entire wiring harness to prevent future connection problems. While not a catastrophic repair, it needs prompt attention as continued driving can lead to carbon buildup and potential injector damage. Your Atlas symptoms match the classic signs of glow plug system failure. Recommend getting a second opinion from a VW diesel specialist who can properly diagnose whether its just the plugs or if the harness also needs replacement.

Thanks for the detailed response about the glow plug failure! Really helpful to hear from someone who experienced the same issue. I ended up taking my Atlas to a different mechanic who confirmed it was indeed the glow plugs and control unit causing the problems. Would you mind sharing how much the repair cost you in total? Also curious if youve had any diesel engine issues since the fix was done. My mechanic mentioned something about keeping an eye on the injectors during future car maintenance visits.

Just wanted to follow up on the repair costs since you asked. On my Touareg, getting the glow control unit fixed solved all those cold start and engine misfire problems. The repair was surprisingly straightforward, turned out to be a faulty cable connection that needed attention. Total cost came to 95€ for the repair work. Since fixing that glow control unit issue, the diesel engine has been running smoothly with no problems at all. The black smoke during acceleration completely cleared up, and both warning lights disappeared. Regular car maintenance checks show everything working as it should be. Good call on watching those injectors though. During cold starts especially, faulty glow plugs can strain the injection system. But once you get the glow plug system working properly, it really helps protect those expensive components from unnecessary wear. The engine light hasnt shown up again since the repair, which is always a good sign. Just keep up with routine maintenance and you should be good to go.

Finally got the Atlas fixed last week. The diagnostic test confirmed it was the glow plugs and control unit just like you mentioned. Total repair came to 850€, more than I expected but worth it to get the job done right. The new mechanic I found specializes in VW diesels and actually showed me the corroded parts they removed. Huge difference in how the car runs now. No more black smoke during acceleration and the warning lights are gone. The cold start issues cleared up completely too. The engine feels much smoother overall. The mechanic did a thorough check of the injectors while they had everything apart. Said they looked good but recommended I stick to a strict car maintenance schedule going forward. Got my next service already booked in 3 months just to be safe. Really glad I got that second opinion instead of letting my original mechanic guess at the problem. The vehicle stalling issues were starting to make me nervous about driving it.
