VW Atlas Immobilizer Issue Stalls Engine Starts

My Atlas with 123661km keeps having ignition troubles. The engine either wont start at all or dies right after starting. I read out the error codes and suspect an issue with the car immobilizer system. Had a bad experience with my local mechanic last time, so looking for advice from others who dealt with similar starting problems. What should I look out for and what questions should I ask the shop? Its a 2021 model with gasoline engine.

Had the same symptoms on a 2018 VW Tiguan. The security light would flash when trying to start, indicating an immobilizer fault. The key signal was not being recognized properly due to a failed antenna ring around the ignition. The fix required specialized diagnostic equipment to verify the immobilizer system and reprogram the key. Some shops claim they can do an immobilizer bypass, but this is not recommended as it compromises the vehicle security features. Important questions to ask: Do they have VW-specific diagnostic tools, Can they verify if its the key transponder or the antenna ring, Will they test the remote start functionality after repair, What warranty do they offer on programming work This was a serious repair requiring dealer-level equipment. Without proper diagnosis, shops often replace unnecessary parts. Make sure they can properly test the immobilizer system before authorizing repairs. The good news is that once fixed properly, the problem should not return. Just avoid shops that suggest quick fixes without proper diagnostic steps.

Thanks for the detailed response about the immobilizer fault issue. This matches exactly what happened with my VW. The anti-theft system kept engaging out of nowhere and the ignition control module needed reprogramming. Curious, what did the repair end up costing you? In my case, the key programming and antenna ring replacement were separate charges. Also, have you experienced any other starting problems since the fix?

Good news on my end, after getting the proper diagnosis and repair done, the immobilizer system has been working flawlessly. The total charge was just 45€ for the key programming correction. Turned out the antenna ring was fine, so no replacement was needed in my case. The issue was solely related to the immobilizer fault in the programming. The technician used proper diagnostic equipment to verify the anti-theft system was the root cause, and there have been zero starting problems since the fix. The remote start functionality also works perfectly now. This confirmed my suspicion that attempting an immobilizer bypass or other quick fixes would have been a waste of money. Really glad I found a shop that knew exactly what they were doing with the diagnostic testing. They actually showed me how the security system was malfunctioning before the repair, and then demonstrated the proper operation afterward.

After considering the provided feedback, I finally got my Atlas fixed. Found a certified shop that properly diagnosed the immobilizer system issue. The repair cost came to 380€ total, 280€ for the new antenna ring and 100€ for key programming and diagnostic work. The mechanic showed me how the car immobilizer was failing to recognize the key signal, creating those frustrating no-start conditions. They used specialized VW diagnostic equipment to identify the exact problem rather than guessing. The anti-theft system now works perfectly and starting issues are completely resolved. The remote start function is also back to normal. Really glad I asked here first, helped me find a qualified shop instead of risking another bad repair experience. Best part is they provided a 2-year warranty on the programming work. Much better outcome than my previous mechanic who wanted to try an immobilizer bypass without proper diagnosis.
