VW Beetle Climate Controls Dead, AC and Heat Failing

My climate control panel recently started acting up, no AC, weak heating, and error codes showing. The control panel itself seems unresponsive at times. Running a 2017 VW Beetle with gas engine at 19055km. Has anyone experienced something similar? Looking for advice on what to check first and if its likely just the control panel or potentially something more serious. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic so want to get some insights before taking it in anywhere.

Summary of the thread

The climate control panel in a 2017 VW Beetle became unresponsive, leading to issues with the air conditioning and heating. Possible causes include a faulty electronic control unit or damaged wiring harness, as similar issues in other VW models have shown. Solutions involve checking and potentially replacing the control panel or wiring, with a recommendation to consult a VW certified shop for accurate diagnostics. Prompt attention is advised to prevent further complications.

Had the same issue on a 2014 VW Golf TSI. The climate control system completely failed, showing error codes and providing inconsistent heating. The root cause was a damaged wiring harness between the control panel and the blower motor. The electrical connectors had corroded over time, causing intermittent connections. This created communication issues between the climate control module and other components. The problem initially seemed minor but actually required significant work to resolve. The repair involved: Testing the electrical system, Replacing the main wiring harness, Installing new electrical connectors, Recalibrating the climate control module This was definitely a serious repair requiring specialized diagnostic equipment. A failing control panel can indicate deeper electrical issues affecting the entire air conditioning system. Would suggest having it checked by a VW certified shop since these systems are quite complex. The symptoms you describe match exactly what happened before my full system failure. Best to address it quickly before it affects other connected components.

Thanks for sharing those details about the wiring harness repair. Currently dealing with a similar climate control issue in my 2016 Beetle and your experience helps a lot. The temperature sensor also started acting up recently and the blower motor makes strange noises. Did you happen to remember the total repair cost? Also wondering if any other related problems popped up since getting it fixed. I am trying to budget for the worst case scenario before taking it to the shop.

After getting my VW Golf TSI checked by the mechanic, the climate control panel issue turned out less severe than expected. The main problem was a faulty cable connection to the control module, which they repaired for 95€. Much simpler fix than my initial wiring harness concerns. The electronic fault was resolved by cleaning and properly reconnecting the plug components. Since the repair, the HVAC system has worked flawlessly, no more unresponsive controls or blower motor issues. The air conditioning and heating both function normally now. Your temperature sensor and blower noise could indicate different issues than what I experienced. Still recommend getting it diagnosed soon, as climate control problems can cascade into bigger repairs if left unchecked.

Finally decided to visit my local VW specialist about my climate control troubles. Glad I asked here first since it helped me know what to expect. Turned out the issue was similar but not identical to yours, had a damaged electronic control unit that was causing the temperature sensor malfunctions. The total repair came to 285€ including diagnostic time. They found the wiring harness was actually fine, but the control panel itself needed replacement. The air conditioning and heating now work perfectly. The strange blower noise disappeared after they cleaned out some debris near the intake. The whole repair took about 3 hours. Definitely beats the horror stories I heard about my previous mechanic charging for unnecessary work. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it gave me confidence to get it checked before the problem got worse.
