Check the glow plugs to ensure they are functioning properly, as they are crucial for starting a diesel engine, especially in colder conditions. You can test them with a multimeter to see if they are receiving power and have the correct resistance. If any are faulty, replace them. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
it turns over but wont "catch", for lack of a better term, I was always told that it wont turn over if the glow plugs are bad or faulty

While it's true that glow plugs are essential for starting a diesel engine, especially in cold weather, if the engine turns over but doesn't start, it could also be an issue with the fuel delivery system. Check the fuel pump to ensure it's working correctly and delivering fuel to the engine. Listen for the pump's operation when you turn the ignition on. If you suspect it's not functioning, you may need to test or replace it. Keep me updated on your progress or if you have more questions!

it seems like the fuel is getting to the fuel filter and to the fuel rail. but still will not stay running. we tried to bleed the air out by opening each port and turning the motor until fuel drips out of the nut on the fuel rail.(I think I'm explaining that correctly) but will fire an stay running. could it be a relay or some kinda fuse?

Check the fuel pump relay and associated fuses to ensure they are functioning properly. A faulty relay or blown fuse can prevent the fuel pump from operating consistently, leading to starting issues. Swap the relay with another of the same type if possible to test it. Let me know if this resolves the issue or if you need further assistance!

Also what are the numbers on the relays needed for the glow plug and fuel pump relays

For your 2001 VW Beetle, the fuel pump relay is typically labeled with the number "409" or "167," and the glow plug relay is often labeled "180" or "103." However, these numbers can vary, so it's best to refer to your vehicle's manual or the relay panel cover for accurate identification. If you're unsure about which relay to replace, check the relay panel diagram for guidance. Let me know if you have more questions or need further help!

In the 2001 VW Beetle, the main fuse boxes are typically located under the hood and inside the car on the driver's side. However, there is also a relay panel located under the dashboard on the driver's side, which may contain additional relays and fuses. You might need to remove a panel or cover to access it. Check there for the relays you're looking for. Let me know if you find what you need or if you have more questions!
