VW Beetle Overheating + Check Engine: Air Flap Issue

Having troubles with my 2015 VW Beetle (69842km, gasoline engine). The car overheating frequently and check engine light stays on. Seems like an active air flap issue but previous mechanic couldnt fix it properly. Anyone dealt with similar cooling system problems on their Beetle? What was the actual issue and how much did the repair cost? Looking for recommendations before visiting another shop for a diagnostic scan.

Had the same thermal management issue on my 2012 VW Golf GTI. The check engine light came on and engine temperature kept climbing even during normal driving conditions. A diagnostic scan revealed fault codes related to the radiator flap motor. The active air flap system was completely stuck, preventing proper airflow through the radiator. The flap motor needed replacement along with the entire control module. The repair was quite serious since continuous overheating could have caused severe engine damage if left unaddressed. The root cause was a failed electromechanical actuator that controls the radiator flaps. This component often fails due to constant exposure to heat and debris. After replacing both the flap motor and control unit, the cooling system returned to normal operation and the check engine light cleared. Recommend getting a proper diagnostic scan to confirm if your Beetle has the same flap motor malfunction. The symptoms match exactly what I experienced, persistent overheating and warning lights. This isnt a job for guesswork since multiple cooling system components could cause similar symptoms.

Thanks for sharing your GTI experience. I actually had nearly identical problems with my 2015 Beetle last summer. The air intake flaps kept jamming, causing the same overheating and check engine warnings. Did you remember roughly what you paid for the full repair with parts and labor? My flap motor replacement ended up being quite expensive, and Im curious how costs compare. Also wondering if youve had any other cooling system issues pop up since getting it fixed?

After getting the flap motor and control unit replaced last year, my GTI has been running perfectly with no cooling system problems. The repair totally resolved the air flap fault and check engine warnings. The thermal management system now works exactly as it should. The final bill came to 590€ for parts and labor, which covered replacing the defective electromechanism controlling the active air flaps. While not cheap, it was worth fixing properly to prevent potential engine damage from chronic overheating. The air intake system now operates smoothly with no signs of the flaps sticking or causing temperature issues. Its good to hear you got your Beetle sorted out with a similar repair. These active air flap failures seem to be a known weak point in the cooling system design across several VW models from that era.

I took the Beetle to a VW specialist after seeing your replies. Really glad I did since the diagnosis confirmed exactly what you described, faulty grille shutter system causing the overheating issues. The shop found the same problem with the flap motor and control module. Total repair came to 650€, which included parts, labor and a full cooling system inspection. Bit more than what you paid but still felt reasonable given the work involved. Its been 3 months since the repair and the car runs perfectly now. No more check engine lights or temperature warnings. The thermal management system works smoothly and engine stays at normal operating temp even in heavy traffic. Really relieved to have this fixed before it could cause serious engine damage. Thanks again for helping me identify the likely cause. Saved me from getting unnecessary repairs at shops that didnt understand these VW-specific cooling system quirks.
